Any views on Android out there?

I had a long conversation today with someone I respect. Owns a computer shop, but doesn’t sell Macs. And when I mentioned the iPad, I could almost see him recoil. When I pressed him for his opinion, he then offered ‘They’re too easy. They don’t make you think.” A better alternative, in his opinion? An Android.

So, dear readers, what do you think? Used one before? Got one? What’s YOUR opinion on them? I’d love to get your thoughts…

  1. A.Y. Siu says:

I love my Android phone, but I don’t see how it makes me think or how a smartphone or tablet making you think is a good thing. I want to think on my own time. I don’t need a tool to make me think. The tool should do what I tell it to do. Luckily, your friend is incorrect–Android does not make you think. It, like iOS, just does what you tell it to do.

In terms of smartphones, Android has become wonderful recently, and it’s great if you want integration with Google Voice, Gmail, and other Google services. Not as great for playing music (none of the music player applications can match the iPod program on the iPhone), and also no Netflix.

In terms of tablets, Android will come with more bells and whistles (USB port, HDMI out, ability to play Flash, higher screen resolution), but will also be more expensive and less polished than an iPad. I would recommend an iPad instead. Widescreen is also a weird dimension for a tablet, especially when the onscreen keyboard is involved. Great for watching movies, not great for much else.

  2. Thanks for your comments. I wonder if the ‘it needs to make you think’ opinion is commonly held by people of a particular age / occupation at all? Hmmm…

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
